Q: Can I use tea in a smoothie?

A: The marriage of two classic beverages, tea and smoothies, is a very happy one. Teas come with a host of benefits, which range from providing antioxidants, lowering blood pressure, improving digestion, increasing energy and more. And because tea provides flavor without adding any sugar, it is one of my favorite “secrets” for creating lower calorie, uniquely flavored blends.

Using a tea in a smoothie is simple: brew your tea just like you would normally, then store in the refrigerator until fully chilled (you can make big batches to have on hand all week.). When making your smoothie, replace some or all of the liquid with the chilled tea. Another way to incorporate tea is to freeze it in ice cube trays to create flavored “tea ice.” Or, try using warm tea in blends that feature ingredients that are conducive to heat, such as apples, seeds, and spices, and create a “warm smoothie” – a great beverage for the winter.
